To record right now:
- Plug in earphones
- Activate Diagnostic Mode - Reset (hold MENU and PLAY) and hold down PREVIOUS, NEXT and CENTER buttons at Apple logo - Release buttons and you'll hear a chirp and Diagnostic mode will appear
- Use Next button to navigate to "J. RECORD"
- Speak into Left earphone when "BEGIN..." appears
- You'll get about 6 sec. of record time and then "DONE"
- Press center button for playback
- Press Play/Pause to return to list of tests
This is just the mono record feature... as noted here there is also a stereo line-in but that is in the dock connector and activated by "F. LIN REC"

Re: How To Record Right Now With Gen 2 (New) iPod
I have a 15 G iPod and am running 2.0.1. I also do not have the record feature. Maybe it's a 2.0.1 thing.
Re: Need advice on buying an iPod.
If u really want to buy a older one with only 5GB that is fine, but is the price difference really worth it. How much are u getting the old one for? On the new ones there will be a lot more features coming and alot more features already on it. especially the games, and notes. Also the record feature if u like messing with things that is.
Re: Supplier for dock connector
You are wrong, but I shall graciously refrain from commenting on your level of intelligence (never mind your spelling).
The connector is indeed proprietary, and Apple is controlling the usage rights. That is not to say that people will not begin making and selling products that use this connector soon, after Apple grants them the rights to do so.
Need advice on buying an iPod.
I currently do not own an iPod but I'm considering buying one of the Apple refurbished 5GB models. Assuming the small capacity does not bother me, is there any other reason I should not buy this model. Will I be missing out on any important features? I assume the software can be updated?
Re: How To Record Right Now With Gen 2 (New) iPod
First of all, the all new iPod is the 3rd generation- first was the 5 gb with the scroll wheel, then the 10 and 20 gb with the touch pad, and now the all new design for the 10, 15 and 30gb models.
Second, even microphones can play sound. Plug a microphone into a audio out and you will her it in the microphone. The opposite can go for recording. The only logical reason I can think of why only the left is recorded in mono is because maybe the position of the contact on the plug?
I have a question. When recording, where does the file go? is it just a temporary file, or is it saved on the hard drive?
Re: How To Record Right Now With Gen 2 (New) iPod
earphones/speakers & microphones are actually fundamentally the same device: a membrane attached to a magnet & coil. When used as a microphone, the air vibrates the membrane & creates a fluctuating voltage in the magnet. When used as a speaker, a fluctuating voltage (from your stereo) moves the membrane & thus the air around it, producing sound. So yeah, EVERY earphone has a microphone built in;)
Supplier for dock connector
Anyone know if the docking connector is apple proprietary, or a common plug? The connector looks very similar to something you'd find on a pcmcia card or cell phone, but it doesn't take much to make a plug proprietary. I'd like to make both a line-in audio cable (for future reference...), as well as a small (very small) docking port to firewire plug.
Re: How To Record Right Now With Gen 2 iPod
From the linked post: "Anyway, Apple doesn't actually call them 3G aside from Steve's show in front of the press."
While that may or may not have been true when that was posted, it's not any longer. The current Apple eNews issue has a paragraph on the new iPod line that begins "Now in its third generation..."
Regardless, it doesn't really matter what you're definition of a product's generation is, it only matter's what Apple's is. Your calling the new iPods the 2nd generation while Apple maintains it's the 3rd is just confusing your readers.
