Well, we couldn't wait so we went to the local Best Buy and picked up a new Gen 2 15GB. It's going to be taken apart soon, but we first ran Diagnostic Mode on it. It has a recording feature! There is also a test for LINEIN that does recording too. We don't have a mic to test with it at the moment but after "recording" when we listen to the headphones we hear the sound of nothing recorded (you know what we mean right?)
We dumped the strings from the firmware file and the relevent portion is included in the extended text... (click "read more.")

Actually, you can use your headphones as a makeshift microphone. just speak into the earbuds.

What is this "port" right next to the headphones jack ? (not the hold button)

I know it will be a "harsh" thing to do, but how about cutting of the cable and the connectors to the ipod and see where everything goes, maybe (probebly) not all cords are connected.. ?
and another thing, as the new remote has a "special" connector, not as before, maybe some wires (mic) can be conneted there. (1 to the left and 1 to the right [you have 2 "wires" connected to the right, the headphones jack].
it's all about trying things out, I think.

I personally don't think so, since "if" the Addon will come out, then Apple will have to put out ANOTHER Firmware Update, so we could see a "Record" option in the menu.
...I may be wrong... :)

Like somewhat Auto-Sync option? could be... but it would have to be connected in the buttom.
just like we connect the ipod to the Chager / PC / Mac .
