Picture iPod Photo Pieces

We happened to hit the mini Apple Store at Stanford Shopping Center just after they received their initial iPod Photo (60GB) shipment. We picked one up and, rather than wait for the 40GB we ordered online, dissected it.

The iPod Photo is remarkably similar to the Click Wheel iPod internally, so similar that we're going to need to do a side by side dissection to determine the specific changes (aside from the color display, of course.) But, for now, we've got some pictures of the iPod Photo in pieces...

Update: Added pictures of Photo Dock innards.

Due to the fact that it was late in the evening and we were working with a new camera (Canon S500*,) we were unable to catalog all the chips. Again, everything looks pretty much like the Click Wheel but we'll get to identifying the chips soon. However, iPod Photo does use the same processor as the Click Wheel, the Portal Player PP5020.

* We purchased the S500 at the Apple Store Palo Alto on the way back from the mini at SSC. When we got it back to the HQ we noticed that it had already been opened and used. There was a big greasy fingerprint on the display. Nice. It's going back.

Also, the iPod Photo used in this dissection has a dead pixel on the display and the S-video out port on the dock doesn't work. Sheesh...
